Dr. Maria Montessori recognized that all individuals progress through consistent stages of development throughout their lives. Each stage has a specific set of characteristics and needs; therefore, each stage also requires a unique approach. Therefore, the learning environment must be appropriately balanced so as to address the child’s evolving needs.
The key point: Methods or (most other) traditional methods that fail to understand these stages of development will default to “one size fits all” approach. They may adapt their activities to be age-appropriate, but it is the methodology of learning and development, more so than the activities, that ultimately determines the child’s success.
